It is very hard to compare chemical fertilizer to
organic, since they work differently.
High NPK chemical fertilizers give you NPK, but, in
most cases, nothing else. Chemical fertilizers will deplete your soil of the
biological life. It will kill the earthworms and dung beetles. It will make
your soil sterile, and the only nutrients that will be there for your plants to
use are what you put there with the fertilizer. Because of this, much higher
NPK rates are needed. Also, with chemical Nitrogen (the N), for example, your
plants won’t see all the N you are putting down, due
to evaporation and run-off. The N has to go through a process with the soil
before it can be used by the plant, and only a portion will actually be used by
the plant.
With Neptune’s
Harvest Organic Fish Fertilizer (which we use at Dunn Landscaping Co., Inc.), you’re not only getting NPK but
micro-nutrients, amino acids, trace minerals, vitamins, growth hormones, omega
oils and trace elements. With this, you’re building your soil’s health by
increasing the beneficial bacteria and activating the soil microbes – something
you don’t get with chemical, obviously. Earthworm and dung beetle populations
will definitely increase, and this gives you added N (through earthworm
castings and faster breakdown of manure on grazing land). The Nitrogen in the
fish is already chelated, which means it is readily
available to the plant the day it is applied. Because of the natural oils and
meal in the fish, it will stay in the soil longer and not leach through.
In other words, you are giving the plant and soil so
much more than just NPK that you can get away with using much less NPK to grow
a healthy, nutritional, high-yielding crop or rich lawn or garden! Your animals
will also be healthier, because their feed will have much higher protein and
nutrient levels.
